Beware: Bridal Event Trickery

by Chicago Bloggette on February 26, 2010

Has anyone else gone to “free” local bridal events or fashion shows? Since Chicago is a big city with a plethora of these events, I’m always getting new updates from The Knot, and back in January, a few of us finally decided to check one out. The event itself was fairly underwhelming (although we enjoyed the cake samples), and we all left feeling that we’d had our fill with these events.

Here’s the kicker.

A few days after leaving the event, I starting receiving up to four or five unsolicited emails a day from various vendors who had been at the event. While it was free to attend, they required each bride to fill out what I now like to call an “I’m going to sell your email address” card. It’s a bit frustrating—though I’m sure it’s my fault for failing to read the fine print.

If you’re planning to attend a bridal event, I suppose I’d recommend using a false email address when you fill out the entry card, and follow up on your own with the vendors you’re interested in.

Has anyone else had this experience? I’ve noticed that The Knot has been the worst culprit.

By the advice of my friend, I created a email address JUST for wedding related stuff. So anytime I sign up for anything wedding related (including our registries, actually), I’m using that email. That way, once the wedding is done, you cancel the account (or just stop checking it) and all the spam is gone!

I’m attending a bridal expo next weekend. Not only they wanted my email but the one for my friend who’s going with me, and both our WORK addresses. Needless to say, I used my home address for everything, and my “wedding email” for both of us.

Ahh so smart. I wish I’d thought of that six months ago.
