Be Italian.

by LA Bloggette on February 17, 2010

Seeing as to how Matt and I have checked a lot of things off our list of to-dos having to do with the wedding itself we realized that we needed to get a move on planning the honeymoon. I don’t know that I’ve really mentioned it anywhere but we’re planning on going to Italy for two weeks.

We originally wanted somewhere tropical and lounging on beaches but the fact that August is typically hurricane season was not very appealing to me. That and when are we ever going to be able to go to Italy for two weeks again whereas if I really wanted to do tropical Hawaii is only a short flight away and doesn’t need two weeks to see it all.

So now that we are set on Italy we’ve been trying our hardest to figure the whole thing out. From getting passports (Matt needs one and I have to renew mine this year, go figure), to figuring out what we want to do there and what we want to see to looking at flights and routes and meeting with travel agents and buying books about Italy, we’re in the midst of honeymoon planning madness, and it’s a little daunting.

First and foremost, it’s not going to be cheap. Just getting to Italy is going to be pricey. And then staying in hotels the whole time we’re there and you know, eating and visiting some places, it’s going to add up. Matt and I have had our freakouts about the cost because after putting money down for the wedding and then even more for the honeymoon it’s adding up.

But finally, I just said, I don’t care. I have always been a saver and forgone some vacations and things I really wanted in the past due to my saving style and I realized now is just not the time to do it. I have money saved up, I will earn more money eventually to get it all back and when will I be doing this again? It’s my honeymoon and I’m going to live it up. Yes I know this sounds frivolous but I really just don’t care any more. I’ll find a way to pay for it all, Matt will contribute, I’ll contribute, I’ll get a second job if I really have to (who wants to pay me to blog for them, hint hint) I am throwing caution to the wind and enjoying myself.

A honeymoon is a one time thing and I want to celebrate and embrace it for everything it means to us, and I’m finally ready to accept that and just do it.

That and how could I not want to lounge here for an afternoon sipping wine….

Hello Cinque Terre!

Where did you go (or are planning to go) for your honeymoon? Did you have a dillemma with price as well?

We’re going to the Cook Islands. Ours will be at the end of September, early October, so I’m hoping the hurricanes have passed by then. It’s supposed to be their spring.

My fiance and I got engaged in Italy. Florence was our favorite place, if you need advice on places to stay, let me know. We found a great hotel just out of the tourist area (but close enough to walk) called Hotel David. It was reasonably priced too.

As of now, we’re planning on going to “Porto de Galinhas” — voted one of the best beaches in Brazil. I haven’t been, but heard great things about it!

It’s in the north of Brazil, so the weather is warm, year-round. Here are a few pics, thanks to Google Images: http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&source=hp&q=porto%20de%20galinhas&oq=&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi

When I started reading this, I was all, “OMG They should go to Cinque Terre!!” and then I see your pic. PERFECT place. If you’re looking at Rome, when I was there, a visiting friend used this website to rent an APARTMENT instead of a hotel: http://www.lacasaroma.com/index.php
I’m sure you could find that in Cinque Terre, too.
Other things about Italy you need to know: Wine is cheaper than water. Limoncello tastes better mixed with lemon lime Fanta. Croissants are the breakfast of Italian champions. The cobblestones are going to fuck up your heels so take cheap ones (or wear flats).

Also… we went to Barbados. We scoped out different all-inclusives and then signed up for their newsletters. Lo and behold, one of them offered a half price deal for certain weeks of travel so we jumped on that.

Oh I totally agree with you, go for it! You may never get to again :) Especially if you aren’t going to go super in debt :) Also? I haven’t even though about our honeymoon yet. Ok we still have 8 months. whew.

OK, seriously, I’m super excited for y’all. I spent a summer in Italy in the small town of Cortona (from Under the Tuscan Sun!) and I definitely recommend it to anyone. I can also give you some fantastic places to check out in my town, as well as other towns around Cortona.

We haven’t been working on honeymoon stuff just yet, to be honest. I’ve torn out articles and given them to my fiance for him to check out. We won’t be honeymooning right after our wedding, though, because he has school. It won’t be until December or his spring break in March. But I’m super excited just thinking about it!

Also? I second everything Renee said.

And remember to ask for your check whenever you’re ready to leave a restaurant. The first time we went out, we didn’t know Italian servers would leave us alone and not bring the check ever. So we kept waiting and waiting until someone thought to ask. A good thing to know, even though the long dinners without feeling obligated to leave are amazing.

omg italy is going to be AMAZING!

I would have lovedddd to go to italy but we couldn’t swing it – Puerto Rico was fabulous and amazing though.

And I agree – if you’re going to splurge on something? The honeymoon is definitely the thing to splurge on – can’t wait to hear more! <3

I spent a summer in Rome during college, and I would give anything to get back there! My one regret is not making it to Cinque Terre – though the island of Capri is a complete paradise if you’re looking for a few days of beach. I’m so excited for you!

A little off topic maybe, but a request for people to consider the ethics of purchasing things like designer clothes. Please try and consider, for example, the materials your product is made from, the human rights of the factories where they’re manufactured and the green credentials of retailers. Oh, and try to share instead of discarding. Thanks!!!!
